Mayor Tonga Y. Turner made history at 32 as both the youngest Town resident elected to public office, and as the first African American Mayor elected in the over 300-year history of the Town of Upper Marlboro. A national trailblazer, Mayor Turner’s “New Vision for Upper Marlboro” is a revitalization strategy centered on key principles that focus on family values, improved Town services, quality of life, economic development and infrastructural growth.

 

Mayor Turner is focused on improving outcomes through innovation and building strategic partnerships. She proudly serves the citizens of the Town of Upper Marlboro by developing and implementing public policies that facilitate guided growth through the protection of community assets. Mayor Turner’s passion and dedication for public services and community engagement are the key motivating factors which led to her initiative to seek public office.

 

Since taking office, Mayor Turner has launched several community initiatives and policy changes. Mayor Turner and the Board of Commissioners have worked to pass several legislative bills and applied for over $1.2 Million in grants within the first year of their term. This is with the intention of supporting the needs of the local businesses and expanding the future of the Town of Upper Marlboro. Working with her colleagues and other community leaders, Mayor Turner has diligently secured necessary resources for the improvement of the community’s economic development, local infrastructure, and public safety needs.

In addition to her public service duties, Mayor Turner is also a skilled and experienced leader in the healthcare industry. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Health Science from Howard University along with a master’s degree in Health Sciences from the University of Maryland, College Park. She is married to her best friend Stanley Turner, and a devoted mother to her two boys, David and Luke.
