Monica Perry
Monica B. Perry, originally from Morton, Pennsylvania, considers herself a native Washingtonian, having lived in the Nation’s Capital for over 40 years. She is a champion of scholarship and community engagement. Monica attributes her life’s success and growing wisdom to her strong educational foundation beginning with her public-school education. She attended DC public schools from elementary to high school – attending Scott Montgomery Elementary, Shaw Junior High School and Woodrow Wilson Senior High School. Monica B. Perry is the single parent of four and grandmother of five.

Monica grew up in DC during an era, similar to that in other urban cities, when poverty and violence plagued the communities. Early on, Monica aspired to go to college; believing an advanced degree to be the solutions for overcoming the marginalization saturating her community. Monica was the first in her family to pursue post-secondary education. Monica’s resourcefulness and personal determination fueled her motivation to succeed, to that end she secured hundreds of scholarships yearly to fund her college education.
Monica’s sacrifices and determination paid off when she graduated from North Carolina Central University in 1993 cum laude with a Bachelor’s of Business Administration with a concentration in Management. Monica B. Perry uses her professional skills as a Procurement Project Task Manager with Maximus Federal working the 2020 Census. She also leads a team as a Project Manager administrator with Alexton at their FEMA site.
Monica applies her professional skills and experience through her volunteer efforts. Monica’s takes the hands-on-approach as a positive presence within the DCPS system as a substitute teacher and by serving in many leadership roles with organizations she’s been affiliated.
Monica engages the community through her dedication and support in various Ward 5 activities. She lends her services as a longtime PTA member volunteering as a Room Parent 2015-2017 and the PTA president from 2016 to 2018. She currently serves as the At-Large Local School Advisory Team (LSAT) for Tyler Elementary. She further engages the community as a lifetime member of the Phyllis Wheatley YWCA and functioned on their board of directors from 2010 -2012. Tirelessly Monica adds value to local women’s organizations including Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. - Washington DC Alumnae Chapter where she is an active and current member. She has served as a Co-Chair of the My Cry in the Dark, a committee working with seniors and mental health. As a chapter member, she emphasizes the missions of the sorority as a member of the social action committee and financial fortitude committee. Today Ms. Perry continues to champion youth causes and initiatives. She acted as the program director for several youth programs including MCS Youth Peacemakers leadership program and Everybody Wins Leaders are Readers reading and leadership programs.

It is through her commitment to scholarship that Monica champions her fundraising and networking skills. She consistently served as an active and lifetime member of both the National Alumni Association and Metro DC Chapter since 2010 for North Carolina Central University. Since that time she has served as chair of the Holiday Party, Scholarship Gala Chair several times, Chair of the Nominating Committee, and President of the chapter from 2016 -2018. She took the lead on several fundraising activities raising over $50,000 for the university. While sitting at the helm of the Metro DC Alumni Chapter, Monica was instrumental in building a stronger relationship with the Historical Black Colleges and University Alliance- DC Chapter. She notably assisted the organization in increasing the number of participants in the annual 5k race. Because Monica believes in education and uplifting the community, she passionately builds relationships and bridges gaps to ensure diverse groups of people are able to work together to promote scholarship and education. She works very hard to help students from the DMV be afforded the opportunity to matriculate at North Carolina Central University. As a mentor and NCCU alum, she continues to maintain relationships with chapter scholarship recipients for the last 4 years.

She is currently raising scholarship funds for the Metro DC Scholarship by chairing the 2019 Scholarship Gala and also raising $50,000 for the NCCU National Alumni Association Scholarship.
Monica continues to prove her commitment and demonstrate her dedication to others. She credits this to a strong, loving, and caring family at home and North Carolina Central University.
